Hitoshi Ariga is a professional artist whose Pokemon work goes far beyond individual card illustration. Bulbapedia describes him as a manga and picture-book artist with game-industry graphic design experience, long associated with the Mega Man franchise, and records his Pokemon TCG work from 2011. The Art of Pokemon describes him as a cartoonist and illustrator active across comics, books, game design, pixel design and character design.
Pokemon designer, manga artist and TCG illustrator
For collectors, Ariga is especially important because he also designed Pokemon. Bulbapedia lists designs including Pangoro, Honedge, Doublade, Aegislash, Inkay, Malamar, Tyrunt, Tyrantrum, Amaura, Aurorus, Mega Beedrill, several Alolan forms, Vikavolt, Drampa, Corviknight, the Galar fossil Pokemon, Sneasler, Nacli line, Espathra, Flutter Mane, Ogerpon forms and Mega Drampa. That design role gives his TCG cards extra context.
In the PKMN Collectors database, Ariga appears on more than 140 cards, with both Pokemon and a substantial group of Trainer cards. Early examples include Manaphy, Pikachu EX, Hoopa EX, Misdreavus, Lapras, Bisharp, Luxray, Scrafty, Team Aqua Walrein, Team Magma Mightyena, Zapdos, Skarmory, Metagross, Aegislash and Lucario.
His Trainer and character work is just as collectible: Lysandre Trump Card, Archie Ace in the Hole, Maxie Hidden Ball Trick, Professor Birch Observations, Teammates, Team Rocket Handiwork, Brock Grit, Looker, Steven Resolve, Sabrina Suggestion, Welder, Poke Maniac, Red & Blue, Poke Kid, Ball Guy, Peony, Gordie, Youngster and Clavell all appear locally. His Pokemon work also includes Cosmic Eclipse Pikachu and modern cards such as Crocalor, Wigglytuff, Orthworm, Scyther, Annihilape, Mabosstiff and Amaura.
For collectors, Ariga is a high-context artist: his cards connect manga energy, official Pokemon design, Trainer personality and species history. A binder page built around his name tells a broader story than a simple illustrator run. It shows how one artist can shape both the cards and the world those cards come from.
